First rule: don’t change your apps if it’s not absolutely necessary.
Second rule: understand how you can grow by changing apps.
What Is My Action System?
It’s the one I dedicate to managing everything that drives me to action: goals, projects, tasks.
I’ll share how my Action System has evolved.
What do I look for by changing apps on it?
Everything but wasting my time and energy.
Reason 1: Simplicity
I want to simplify my life.
The simpler it is, the higher I perform, the better I feel.
I’ve been working pretty hard for more than 30 years to simplify my PKM.
Reason 2: Better GUI/UX experience
I do believe my performance is directly connected to a great GUI/UX experience.
It’s not just “a beautiful design”. It’s the desire to want to use an app, not wanting to leave it, feeling cozy while using it.
This is perfectly described in this article I discovered thanks to Elizabeth Butler, written by Craft’s founder, Balint Orosz.
I do agree with him: “The tools we use, shape us”.
I highly recommend you to read it.
Reason 3: Speed
I want to move fast while using my systems.
Speed equals concentration, optimization, focus, flow.
All skills related to high-performance.
I don’t want to run. I just want to perform at my best without suffering.
Reason 4: Flexibility
I learn a lot about workflows when using other apps.
The point is I want the app to fit my workflows as much as possible.
The more flexible the app is, the more I can precisely implement my workflow on the app.
That allows me to bring closer the physical part of my brain to the digital one, one of my goals in life: making those two parts work together sharing the same workflows.
Takeaways
- By changing from one app to another, you evolve.
- It’s not a matter of change for the sake of it.
- It’s a matter of deeply studying if the change is worthwhile.
- If it is so, go for it. Your PKM will grow. You will too.
