8 Intuitive Steps to Plan Your New Year Using Your PKM

2 min read

Your PKM isn’t just a place to store/recall things.

Your PKM is the digital part of your brain that helps you live a better life.

Here, I share 8 easy and intuitive steps to plan your new year using your PKM.

Follow them and forget about new year’s resolutions that never succeeded.

Let’s plan your new year!

Step 1: Structure Your Life

Think of your life just based on these 3 elements:

  1. Pillars.
  2. Roles.
  3. Topics.

Pillars are consolidated areas in your life. Things you have to pay attention to.

Roles are the different “hats” you wear in your life.

Topics are subjects you’re interested in. They’re like the highways of your life in a certain period.

Step 2: “Mindmap” Your Life

The core node of that mind map will be “YOUR LIFE”.

From there, you’ll have 3 nodes: pillars, roles, topics.

That’s how you’ll “see” your life.

Recommended apps: Mindnode or XMind.

Step 3: Pillars, Roles, Topics

From the 3 previous nodes, create nodes for each pillar, role, or topic you may think of.

Pillars examples: growth, personal life.

Roles examples: son, father, husband.

Topics examples: PKM, web3, leverage.

Step 4: Goals

A goal is something you want to achieve.

For each pillar, role, or topic node, define a goal.

Try to write it as clear as possible.

Forget about SMART goals. It causes friction.

Move from the SMART concept to just “goals based in common sense”.

Some goal examples:

  • Feeling in good health.
  • Improve my online writing.
  • Pay attention to my parent’s life.

Step 5: Projects and Habits

You only have 2 options to achieve a goal:

  1. Project.
  2. Habit.

For each goal, define a project or a habit.

Some project examples:

  • Agreement with 20 suppliers.
  • Develop new site.
  • Look for new software.

Some habits examples:

  • Workout twice a week.
  • Journal every day.
  • WhatsApp my parents every day.

Step 6: Schedule Projects

For projects, just think about the different steps/tasks you need to follow.

Choose the first step/task.

Schedule when you’ll do it.

Step 7: Schedule Habits

For each habit, think of a day and time to practice it.

My recommendation: bet on daily habits.

Step 8: Do

Start doing your project’s first step.

Start practicing your habits daily.

There’s no option: you’ll achieve your goals.
